At the hugely successful second annualBrookfield MultiplexPerfect Pink Ball, the Friends of Cancer Patients (FoCP) charity, along withThe Pink Caravan – its pan–UAE breast cancer screening and awareness initiative – were honoured with the prestigious status of charity and campaign of choice respectively.
The charity ball, which is organised by Brookfield Multiplex and marks October as the International Breast Cancer Awareness month, is a striking example of the impact that events that result from collaboration between the non-governmental and the private or public sectors, haveon cancer awareness and fundraising.
Thanking Brookfield Multiplex, the organisers, and guests for this honour, and for their ongoing support of the charity, HE Ameera Binkaram, President of the Board of Trustees and a founding member of the Friends of Cancer Patients charity, took the opportunity to update attendees on the important progress made to date by Friends of Cancer Patients and the Pink Caravan., and to also announce two major milestones to the audience. These were the 5th edition of the Pink Caravan ride in 2015; and the launch of the next phase of the Pink Caravan to purchase and operate the CareVan, the charity's first dedicated advanced mobile mammography screening unit.
Highlighting the history of the Friends of Cancer Patients, Ameera said, "FoCP decided to take cancer awareness a step further by creating the "Kashf" initiative, which focuses on promoting awareness for the early detectable cancers which are; breast cancer, cervical cancer, prostate cancer, testicular cancer, skin cancer and colorectal cancer and with a recent addition of 'Signs and Symptoms' of childhood cancer."
"In April 2011, UAE witnessed the tremendous success of FoCP's first 'Kashf' initiative, the "Pink Caravan Breast Cancer Awareness Campaign". During the past four years, this Pink movement has achieved a record breaking 28,091 screenings for both women and men, with further investigations of more than 6,803 referred mammograms, 900 referred ultrasounds and over 20 biopsies. During this period, 21 patients have been diagnosed as breast cancer positive, including 20 women and an Emirati man, who are all receiving treatmentthroughFoCP."
HE Ameera announced that during the 5th edition of the 11-day ride in 2015, 30 Pink Caravan ambassadors, 150 riders, and over 40 doctors and nurses, plus 200 volunteers, will ride over 333km across the UAE to advocate and promote the importance of early detection of breast cancer, and to perform live clinical and mammography screenings across the Emirates.
She was delighted that many of the guests attending the evening joined her in sending an SMS donation pledge, right then and there towards the Pink Caravan: HE added: "Tonight at the Brookfield MultiplexPerfect Pink Ball,we have come to a turning point for the Pink Caravan. Pink Caravan is determined to achieve more, and with this help and support from individuals and corporates like you, we are confident we will."
The Brookfield Multiplex Perfect Pink Ball – a black-tie event, with a touch of pink – is now in its second year. Held at The Dubai Ballroom of the JW Marriott Marquis Dubai on Sheikh Zayed Rd, it is timed to coincide withInternational Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The Ball brings together corporations, individuals and campaigners for an evening of dining and entertainment, fundraising and information-sharing. It has rapidly become a prestigious and respected event in the region's social and charitable calendar. The partnership with Friends of Cancer Patients and The Pink Caravan has been a prominent feature of both years' Balls. All the proceeds from the evening will go to the Pink Caravan. In 2013, the Ball's inaugural version raised around 200,000dirhams for Pink Caravan, gratefully-received funds which all went towards breast cancer treatment and screening.
Guests listened intently to and applauded the work done so far by Friends of Cancer Patients and Pink Caravanthat HE Ameera guided them through. FoCP has helped and supported over 1,010 cancer patients and their families across the UAE since its formation in 1999, under the direction of Her Highness Sheikha Jawaher Bint Mohammed Al Qasimi, Wife of the Ruler of Sharjah, Founder and Royal Patron of the Friends of Cancer Patients charity(FoCP), International Ambassador of the World Cancer Declaration for Union for International Cancer Control (UICC) and International Ambassador for Childhood Cancer for UICC.
